Rope
Ropes types
They are divided into two types "natural" and "synthetic"
Here a preselection:
- Shibari: Jute or Hemp
- Floor bondage or sex bondage: Cotton (or Nylon, but be careful with Nylon rope burn)
natural
- Jute
- water sensitive
- twisted Rope
- good knot stability
- Hemp
- Twisted structure
- strong knots
- medium water sensitive
- Cotton
- plaited structure
- not very suitable for suspension (more bendable)
- washable (very often)
- soft touch
- good for sex bondage
synthetic
- Polypropylene
- stiff (can create rope burn on skin)
- good option for water bondage (because not damageable by water)
- medium stability
- Nylon
- risk of rope burn
- expands under tension
- plaited
- soft touch
- washable (as often as you want)
Rope length
Standard length 8m. Most people will individualize the length to the partner after a time. Use more wraps instead of thicker ropes.
Safety measurements
General safety advices
- Check rope equipment
- check suspension point (everytime)
- slept enough?
- ate & drank enough?
- do you feel emotionally | physically read to tie | getting tied?
- !consumed any drugs?
- !Took any medication?
- ?Have you discussed limits & expectations?
- ?Are you informed about potential risks?
- ?Pre-existing diseases? (explicitly ask for asthma, diabetes or epilepsy ; discuss medication in advance)
Concrete anatomical safety advices
- "trivial" injuries
- heamatoms (as you lay in suspension, you may get blue marks)
- rope burnrope marks (can happen if you pull marks to fast over your skin; or pressure)
- petechia (small red dots on skin; happens of on arms)
- blister (bloated skin ; due to high pressure on body)
- serious injuries
- nerve damage (happens a lot ; be fully informed about them)
- skin compression always involves nerve damage. Pay high attention to weak muscles or no feeling of senses.
- potential danger areas
- arms (from spine over shoulder into armpit (plexus brachialis) - then go on the inner side of arm down to hand). be careful at wrists (inner side). one of the nerves switches to outside
- in general, keep the rope pressure points to the outer side of arm and away from ellbow. also for chest harnesses, keep away from plexus brachialis
- arms (from spine over shoulder into armpit (plexus brachialis) - then go on the inner side of arm down to hand). be careful at wrists (inner side). one of the nerves switches to outside
- partial tingling is nerve damage. wider area probably blood being pressed off.
- nerve damage is time based ; therefore check regularly
- to cure: don't compress (like in a massage) and do not take painkillers
- fainting
- check (cold sweat, nausea, ...)
- low blood sugar
- too hot
- dehydrated
- standing too long
- abrupt change of position
- wrong breathing
- nerval (solarplexus, carotis sinus)
- lay partner on the back on the floor, monitor partner. Untying is not priority, however remove blindfold or gag immediately. calmly communicate caringly. maybe put feet in higher position. cut rope at nerve positions
- check (cold sweat, nausea, ...)
- nerve damage (happens a lot ; be fully informed about them)
Checking safety
- do these hand checks regularly
- !giving thumbs up
- !pressing wrists bnackwards
- if this is not possible, it is called "falling hand", injured nerve is radialis. Might take hours (or weeks) to recover
- clenching wrists (making a fist)
- open and close hands
- touch every finger with your thumb
Personal risk profile
- how anxious do you feel about possible risks & injuries?
- What is your level of experience?
- rigging
- modelling
- first aid
- blood stasis | nerve damage
- Are there any ties
- you dont want
- you definitely want
- you are feeling insecure about?
- Do you want suspension?
- Static or dynamic poses?
- Time limit for suspension?
- Checking hand functions
- self determined
- by request of the rigger
- how frequently
- What and how do you want to communicate during tying process?
- Special anatomical needs? (like implants)
- How do you wish to deal with tingling hands?
- Psychological trauma? Able to monitor your body while being in subspace?
Cutting tools
- NEVER use knifes
- open blade
- high potential to harm partner
- Medical scissor
- usage: lightly cut multiple times
- safe to use as cutting tool (because of rounded edge)
- hidden blade
- blade is slippery (good to cut once but it will get stump fast so change frequently)
- Textile scissor
- rounded edge
- hidden blade (very good grip when cutting rope; use 1-3 times until change as it will get stump)
- Gnut Hook or Rescue Cutter or Belt Cutter
- usage: go in and then pull the blade against the rope (away from body)
- rounded edge
- hidden blade
- good grip
- very sharp
- don't have to throw entire thing away, buy new blades instead
Self reflection
Here a list of good question to get to know your partner and the expectations.
- What arouses your interest in bondage?
- What bondage pics or videos inspire you? why?
- what do you desire to feel or experience during tying or being tied?
- what do you need to trust someone in ropes?
- bondage = BDSM?
- How do you feel if you imagine being helpless in pain or discomfort?
- bondage = sexually intimate? what does sexual mean for you?
- Bondage = emotionally intimate? what does that mean for you?
- Bondage = sporty/artistic?
- Can you imagine tying | getting tied in front of an audience?
- do you have personal insecurities? (Like feeling fat or so)
- can you imagine feeling helpless | pain | discomfort while being tied?
Consent & Communication
Most consent violations happen due to missing communication about them. Therefore, make sure to check the following.
- have you created your risk profile and do you have a preferred communication style?
- what is your role? giving | receiving | allowing | taking ?
- setting? session | training | public | private ?
- safeword? traffic lights code?
- time limitation?
- test tying?
- how do you feel about blindfolds? gags? not rope related toys? nudity?
- How & where do you want to get touched?
- Do you want to dominate or get dominated?
- Do you want to experience pain? how long? (transition to BDSM)
Psychological aspects and TRE
TRE = Trauma(+Tension) Release Exercise
- Talk about traumatic events to prevent that from popping up during a session
- Shivering after getting tied is a normal reaction to TRE. The body recovers from tension and this does not have something to do with cold.
